Inlet Management Plan

In 1988, the Sebastian Inlet District developed Florida's first comprehensive inlet management plan for coastal management. The District's plan was developed alongside Florida's landmark 1988 Florida Beach Management Act. The plan is updated annually to address issues such as sand bypassing, changes to the shoreface, coastal erosion, navigation and environmental issues. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Beaches and Coastal Systems has been an active partner in the Sebastian Inlet's Management Plan. Inlet management activities are performed within careful guidance of local, regional, state and federal regulatory bodies. The District is considered to be in full compliance with the Beach Management Act and has received numerous awards over the years including the local government award from the Florida Shore & Beach Preservation Association.

Inlet management planning is an ongoing project. The goal of this project is to assemble existing data sets collected by the Sebastian Inlet District and its consultants into an interactive GIS and remote sensing database that can be used to examine long-term trends and shorter-term variability of the beach, shoreface and overall sand budget of Sebastian Inlet. The database is used to assemble, shoreline change data, volumetric data and morphologic data that is used in calculations and predictive models to quantify the littoral sand budget and predict the potential for impacts during severe storms. The database will also drive models to simulate the potential for morphologic changes in the barrier island shoreface and tidal inlet shoals. The final product of the project is a comprehensive 'State of the Inlet' report that can be updated on an annual basis to quantify year to year conditions and thus provide a flexible and dynamic management tool.
